Tella Beer Bar

Ethiopia's Tella home-brew beer is famous, and we tried some within a few hours of arriving in Addis Ababa.

The Tella bar we tried is through the small grey doorway in the centre of the picture - not the place with a coke machine on the left, which is an altogether superior establishment. The stick with a can on the top is the universal Ethiopian signal for 'Tella Shop' and we saw it in many places.

Although the bar may look very basic to the western eye, everything in the bar that we could see was as clean and spotless as it could be. We were a little worried about drinking this kind of drink in this kind of bar on our first day, thinking it might not agree with us, but we had no problems.

Bar decoration seems to be very similar around the world: although in Britain it is unlikely that many places have Arsenal and Manchester United on the same wall. There was no television in this bar, although there did seem to be electricity.
